Roaring Tigers and Leaping Carp: Decoding the Symbolic Language of Chinese Animal Painting

Member Evets Comment on this

On behalf of Cincinnati Art Museum, the GCCCC is extending this invitation to a pre-exhibition briefing for the exotic, first-ever exhibition about Chinese Symbolism spanning its long history. The  exhibition is in October right here in Cincinnati!

June 26, 2009

Dear Valued Member:

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to join us for a special presentation of our forthcoming exhibition Roaring Tigers and Leaping Carp: Decoding the Symbolic Language of Chinese Animal Painting by Dr. Hou-mei Sung, Curator of Asian Arts, Prints, and Drawings of the Cincinnati Art Museum.  Dr. Sung’s talk will take place on July 16, 2009 at 6:00PM in our Fath Auditorium.

During this presentation, Dr. Sung will give a special introduction to this groundbreaking exhibition.  Based on more than two decades of research, Roaring Tigers and Leaping Carp will feature more than 100 exquisite Chinese scroll paintings and objects brought to the Cincinnati Art Museum from around the world. The exhibition decodes, for the first time, stories about social and political conditions, cultural values and philosophical notions, all hidden in plain sight within these art objects that are over 500 years old.

The exhibition highlights works selected from The National Palace Museum in Taipei, The Palace Museum in Beijing, and the Shanghai Museum. This is the first time almost all of these works have been lent to a U.S. museum. It also features works from major museums throughout the U.S., such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Through chronological and thematic displays, the exhibition will reveal how symbols of dragons, tigers, birds and fish evolved throughout Chinese history. Beginning with early works from the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD), animal images had links to topics ranging from the Yin-Yang cosmological system and Chinese beliefs about the cycle of the universe to Confucian morals and Daoist concepts. During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 AD), numerous new themes and designs were developed in animal paintings to convey elaborate political and ethical messages current at court.

Through its scholarship, Roaring Tigers and Leaping Carp is certain to advance the understanding and respect for Chinese art and history.  We hope you will join us for this special event. Please R.S.V.P. by contacting Kara Shibiya at 513-639-2966 or kara.shibiya@cincyart.org.

Sincerely,

Patricia Hynes

China’s Growing Investment in America:
Win-Win Opportunities For Both Nations and the Tri State Region

September 29, 2009
11:15am – 1:15pm

Economic ties between China and the United States continue to strengthen and  mature. Driven initially by US corporate investments in China and exports from China to the United States,  the relationship evolved to  include  increased imports from America and the financing of US government debt by China.  Most experts predict that the US and China are now at the cusp of a new era of economic cooperation that will include significant investment in the US by China’s enterprises and investment funds. This new era opens up great opportunities for both nations and can be an economic shot in the arm for regions in the US that are successful in attracting investments by China’s enterprises.

GCCCC is proud to announce that Mr. Li Xiaojing, General Manager of The Bank of China USA branches and President of the China General Chamber of Commerce-USA, will visit Cincinnati on September 29th and 30th. Mr. Li is uniquely qualified to speak on the current state of China’s economy, give his observations on the prospects for increased direct investment in the United States and share his thoughts on how a region like the Tri State can best prepare and position itself to attract investment here.
